The PMHS Archive is a collection of documents, photographs, maps, books and articles covering all aspects of the Pere Marquette Railroad and its predecessors and successors.
The Archive is housed at the Plymouth Historical Museum, at 155 West Main Street, in Plymouth, Michigan.
The Archive is open from 1:00 to 4:00pm on Wednesday and Friday. Saturday access is by appointment only. The Archive is closed on Sunday for the foreseeable future. As the PMHS archive is still being processed, please call 734-455-8940 x3 before making the trip. Admission is subject to the Museum's admission pricing policies.
The PMHS archive was established in 2001 with the donation of several PMHS archival collections from its membership. At that time a formal agreement was set up with the Joint Archives of Holland at Hope College.
In 2003 the archive made its first major expansion with the donation of the Henry J. Walhout negative collection. The PMHS archive was vastly expanded in 2006 with the acquisition of Art Million's personal collection. The archive was then formally named the "Arthur B. Million Memorial Archive of the Pere Marquette Historical Society," following his death that year.
Due to a variety of factors, the decision was made to remove the PMHS archive from the Joint Archives of Holland in 2011. It remained in storage in various locations and was somewhat dormant, with limited accessibility to either researchers or the public. A renewed effort began in 2019 to find a permanent home for the archive, culminating in an agreement with the Plymouth Historical Museum in August 2021
In 2022, the PMHS Archive received a large quantity of PM-related material from the Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society.
The PMHS Archive contains a limited number of employment records for specific Pere Marquette employees. Research on specific former PM employees is available from the archive in-person at no charge, or can be requested from the Plymouth Historical Museum at its standard research rates.
