About Pere Marquette Employees

Updated: 29-APR-2024

One of the goals of the PMHS is to preserve the memories of former Pere Marquette employees. Until recently, we have done this solely through the pages of our members' publication, PM Tracks, the PMHS newsletter. These articles are prepared by historians and by former PM and C&O employees who have recounted episodes from their employment with the railroad. Articles we have run in past issues of these publications are listed on this Web site on the PMHS Publications page.

We now have a large collection of records from the Pere Marquette containing employee information, primarily for employees from along the Toledo, Saginaw and Ludington Subdivisions. This encompasses employees who worked along the PM and former-PM line from Toledo to Ludington. Our partners at the Archives at the Plymouth Historical Museum's Archives have organized and indexed these records and are now able to offer assistance accessing this information. The most direct way is to visit the Archives at the Museum during the museum's normal hours.

The Plymouth HIstorical Museum is located at 155 S. Main Street in Plymouth, Michigan.

You may also request research on a particular employee by mail, using the Archives Research Request form. There are fees associated with having the Plymouth Historical Museum Archives staff perform this reaserch for you- they are described on the request form.

The U.S. National Archives has a collection of U.S. Railroad Retirement Board documents for railroad employees after 1936. Details on accessing this information are found at their web site at https://www.archives.gov/atlanta/public/railroad-retirement-board-records .

Two other possible sources of information on PM employees are the original PM employee publications PM Rails and Tracks. Copies of these publications, which were issued monthly until the late 1940s, can occasionally be found at railroadiana sales, used book stores, and at shops catering to railroad enthusiasts. A disc containing scans of the pages of Tracks magazine is available from the Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society's online shop at https://www.chessieshop.com .
