PM Structures Still Standing |
Updated: 24-AUG-2007 |
This list encompasses known former PM structures that are still standing in the Province of Ontario. Many of these are not actually preserved, per se, rather they are simply standing. Structures that are in imminent danger of demolition are indicated.
In its current state, this list is not intended to represent a comprehensive list of every last ex-PM structure still standing.
This wood frame structure was the top half of the interlocking tower built by the Michigan Central, which stood adjacent to the PM-Michigan Central junction at Fargo, approximately 8 miles south of Chatham. In the 1960s, the tower was dismantled and the lower half removed. The former top floor was set on a foundation and used as a train order station.
It has been moved to a lot one mile west of the junction, along Cunkle Road.
- Depot - This classic stone depot sits vacant and damaged east of Lansdowne Street on the south side of Kingsville. The depot formerly had a ceramic tile roof, but the roofing material was removed when the building was purchased for salvage. It also sustained damage to its northeast corner in a fire a few years ago.
Recent news reports indicate that Essex County is willing to provide the funds for a replacement roof, but the County has stated that it intends that money for restoring the interior be raised locally.
- Freight House - This small freight house stands a few hundred feet east of the stone depot on the southeast side of Kingsville.
This depot is one of the buildings preserved at the Mooretown museum at 94 Moore Street. It was built in 1886, and moved to the museum site for preservation in 1998. It is accompanied by ex-C&O motor car #M-1834.
This depot is still in use by CSX as a base for its signal maintainance department in Ontario, despite the fact that it is eight miles from the nearest active track, following the removal of the Windsor-St. Thomas line in 1997. It is located on the northwest side of town.
This depot is one of the three remaining in Ontario that are still in use by CSX (the others are Chatham and Ridgetown). It sits at the foot of Clifford Street, alongside the Esso refinery. This depot is just down the St. Clair River's edge from the Sarnia carferry slip.
Formerly located at the south end of Minnie Street, this wood frame depot was moved in the early 1980s to a site on the west side of Arnold Street, just south of Dufferin Avenue, where it has been used as an office building for the Wallaceburg Public Works Yard. It is slated for conversion to a museum.
