PM Structures Still Standing |
Updated: 12-FEB-2012 |
Due to the increasing number of ex-PM structures listed on this Web site, this section of the Web site has been broken into several pages by geographic region.
This list encompasses known former PM structures that are still standing in Michigan, north of a line running from Flint to Port Huron, and east of a line running from Flint to Bay City. Many of these are not actually preserved, per se, rather they are simply standing. Structures that are in imminent danger of demolition are indicated.
The depot at Bad Axe, located on M-142 at Allen Street, has been renovated and expanded by the Huron & Eastern for use as office space.
The original structure is similar to the depot in Marlette, except for being of cut stone construction rather than wood.
As of early summer, 1999, RailAmerica was offering this depot for sale.
This wooden depot sits along the Huron & Eastern tracks which were formerly the PM's between Port Huron and Saginaw via Bad Axe. It now serves as a local history museum.

This depot has been moved from its original site in Deckerville along the ex-PM route from Croswell to Bad Axe, to the historic village in Port Sanilac.

The wooden depot formerly located in Harbor Beach now stands in front of The Train Station Motel overlooking Lake Huron, approximately two miles north of Harbor Beach at 2044 North Lakeshore Road. It was moved to this location several years ago, and is now used as a storage building, having come through the move very well.
This depot sits along the Huron & Eastern tracks just east of state highway M-53.

- Mayville Depot - The Mayville depot was moved to the east side of town, on the south side of state highway M-24, and is now used as a historical museum. It is surrounded by other buildings in the Mayville Historical Society's collection, including a log cabin. An ex-GTW caboose sits alongside the parking lot.
- Port Huron Turntable - One of only a few remaining ex-PM turntables, this 90-foot turntable was dismantled into two pieces and moved by truck to Mayville on July 21, 1999. Recently it has been stored at the U-Haul rental agency in Mayville.
Until that time, it had remained in place at the former site of the PM's Port Huron roundhouse, at the end of Fifteenth Street, overlooking the entrance to the CNNA Port Huron-Sarnia tunnel. The Port Huron roundhouse was closed in 1975 and torn down in 1978, with the adjacent coaling tower removed in 1982.
An article by T.J. Gaffney describing the history of the locomotive facilities at Port Huron appeared in the January, 1998 issue of PM Tracks.
- Vassar Depot - The PM depot formerly located between Goodrich Road and East Street in Vassar is now on the east side of Mayville. Its new home is south of Clifford Road on private property a few hundred yards east of the Mayville Historical Society's Mayville depot. Extensive work has been done to preserve the structure, though it has been modified with different doors, and posts to support the edges of the roof. It is now used as a real estate office.
This depot has been moved from its original site along the ex-PM route from Croswell to Bad Axe.

This unusual L-shaped wooden depot stands at the location where the PM crossed the Grand Trunk Western's former Caseville branch, at the corner of North Main and Michigan Streets in the center of Pigeon. It is currently used as a local historical museum.
- Depot - Still used by CSX at their Port Huron Yard, this brick depot sits just south of the disused Black River drawbridge at the end of Water Street.

CSX has sold the yard property in Port Huron, but the new owner has promised that this depot will be preserved.
- Black River Drawbridge - Before service north of this drawbridge at the very mouth of the Black River was discontinued in 1975, this 1931 bridge provided the PM, C&O, Chessie and CSX with access to businesses on the north side of the Black River. It also served, at one time, as the connection to the former PM route to Croswell and Bad Axe, before that line was abandoned south of Croswell in 1971.
WY tower (shown below) used to guard the north end of the bridge, and served as a bridge tender's shack.
- WY Tower and Bridge Tender's Shack - This brick tower served as a bridge tender's shack for the Black River Drawbridge (see above), until operation over that bridge was discontinued in 1975.
This wooden depot stands on the south side of Portland Avenue, between state highway M-25 and Lake Huron. It wears the remains of one of the PM's original structure paint schemes.
Generally, we haven't listed bridges on the list of preserved structures, but we list this one, since it is the very last structure standing on the Sandusky Branch. This small deck bridge crosses a drainage ditch four miles east of Sandusky, just south of Eddy Road.
Another classic wooden PM depot, Sebewaing's sits along the Huron & Eastern, just east of the intersection of Miller and Union Streets.
As of early summer, 1999, RailAmerica was offering this depot for sale.
The following ex-PM structures are still standing in Michigan's Thumb, but are not yet depicted on this site:
